  • Proper class etiquette

1. The gym/class/dojo is a place of learning and in the tradition of the ancient martial arts deserves respect, so when you enter the gym/class/dojo face the center of the room and bow respectfully. When you leave turn and face the center of the gym/class/dojo and bow respectfully.

2. ALWAYS be on your very best behavior while you are in the gym/class/dojo, it is a place of learning therefore a place of respect and honor.

3. The use of foul language is unacceptable and prohibited in the gym/class/dojo.

4. Address all senior students and all Black Belts by Mr./Mrs./Ms. then their last name. Never call them by their first name.

5. When speaking to any Black Belt (regardless of age) or answering their questions, you should ALWAYS finish by saying "sir" or "ma'am".

6. When any Black Belt enters the gym/class/dojo stop what you are doing and bow to them. If they are a visitor to your gym/class/dojo, respectfully introduce yourself to them and welcome them.

7. If you arrive after class has started DO NOT join class. You should bow and wait at attention until the Instructor gives you permission to join the class.

8. NEVER wear your belt or uniform top outside of the gym/class/dojo. Never leave your belt laying on the floor. Always neatly fold your uniform and wrap your belt around it before leaving the gym/class/dojo.

9. When shaking hands or giving/receiving an item such as a belt or certificate it is always done with the right hand, placing the left hand, palm down under the right elbow and bowing at the same time. The exception to this when handling certain weapons such as swords and staffs, these are given/received with both hands while bowing.

10. NEVER touch the weapon of another person without their permission.
